Our History
Bea Salazar, a single mother of five, transformed her life's lowest point into a mission to help hungry, underprivileged children. From feeding kids in her apartment complex, her efforts evolved into the organization now known as Make It Count.
Under new leadership and direction since Bea’s retirement, the organization took on a new vision and name. Make It Count's Executive Director, Mari Rubio strives to continue the legacy that began thirty years ago.

Everyone, no matter who you are, has a purpose for their life! That is the message in the RESH 180 curriculum (Rising Expectations Standards & Honor). In every High School and Middle School AVID class in the CFBISD, we are offering emotional intelligence, hope, laughter, encouragement, and fun interactive activities. Students are offered a chance to make a “180” degree turn from their previous ways of thinking, and are given a new lens to look at life through. Our coursework offers students a fun, deep, and destiny filled view of their lives. All while having a blast in their class. We are hiring part time facilitators for this next school year. If you have a passion for youth, Make It Count and give us a call.
Our community is full of people who want to help. Make It Count by reaching out to us. There are different opportunities to get involved and help make a difference in the lives of kids. Several Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD students earned their dream pair of shoes this summer with a little hard work and community service. These students spent their break participating in Make it Count’s summer enrichment program.
‘Bea’s Kids’ has evolved its mission from feeding hungry children to helping kids express themselves.
How a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a fierce commitment to helping poor kids stay in school turned one Carrollton woman’s life around—and what Texas can learn from her example.
Located near the entrance from the student parking lot, the mural speaks to the legacy of R. L. Turner and the culture in and around the campus. The project was a collaborative effort between artist Andre Trenier, students and faculty at Turner, Make it Count and Thrive Collective.
The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Rotary Club has long supported the work of Bea's Kids, a local non-profit whose mission is "to provide educational and personal development programs to children from low income families so they will stay in school and break the cycle of poverty."
This month, Ighty Support has donated to Bea’s Kids to help fund Bea’s summer camp and future programs.
