Founder of Bea's Kids, Bea Salazar, a single mother of five, began feeding hungry children from her Carrollton apartment complex at the lowest time of her life. She discovered a small boy looking for food in the dumpster while taking out her trash. Bea used her limited resources to fund dozens of kids left alone during the summer. Her walk to the dumpster inspired her to take her negative situation and make it count for good. Her effort grew to a crusade against hunger, illiteracy, school dropout, domestic strife, drugs, violence, gangs, and poverty.
Under new leadership and direction since Bea’s retirement, the organization took on a new vision and name. Make It Count's Executive Director, Mari Rubio strives to continue the legacy that began thirty years ago. Our summer camp program continues to be a highlight after the school year for children. In 2018, Make It Count outgrew the apartments where classes were once held and made its way into the classrooms in CFB ISD teaching Emotional Intelligence to Middle School and High School students. The motivational curriculum, RESH 180, now spearheads the charitable organization. It's powerful partnership with the district, and AVID programs, allows mentoring to occur inside the classroom and throughout the school year. Along with the summer enrichment, the Christmas Toy Drive, Shoe Drive and AVID Family Nights, the future for our organization is bright as we continue to make it count in our community. If you are looking for charities to donate to, we are excited that you will consider us!
The mission of Make it Count is to provide educational and personal development programs to children from low-income families so they will stay in school and break the cycle of poverty. Our charitable organization has been making an impact for over 30 years.
